March 30, 2015Micro and Small Enterprises in Africa play an important role in the social-economic development in the continent and provide one of the prolific sources of employment,income generation,poverty reduction & development of an industrial base.
In most African countries the informal sector contributes to roughly 80% of total labor force. Even though some governments are trying to provide an enabling environment for the sector much still needs to be addressed.
Realization of the full potential of the MSE sector is paramount in order to achieve the aspirations of Africans. This can become a reality if all stakeholders and specifically countries are able to address MSE’s competitiveness and its integration to national and continental economic grid.
Despite the significant role played by the MSE sector in promoting employment,poverty reduction,income generation the sector continues to face numerous challenges such as poor coordination of MSE policies & programs, inhibitive legal & institutional framework, poor quality of products, low productivity, limited access to credit and information,limited access to infrastructure & market,inadequate business know-how & linkages with large enterprises continue to hamper the growth of the sector.
